Facebook user data at risk

Scams

Thousands of Islanders’ mobile numbers and email addresses could be at risk.

In 2019, a flaw in Facebook’s website was exploited and the personal data of over 500 million users taken which has remained relatively private since then.

However, it appears that this weekend, this data was released publicly. It includes users mobile phone numbers, names, date of birth, employer, email address, and other information.

You can check if your details have been compromised by going to https://haveibeenpwned.com/. When checking your mobile number, use the format 447797123456.

This will almost certainly lead to fraudulent calls, emails and fake SMS messages, so please be on your guard.

Remember the golden rule – if you are contacted out of blue by someone, even if they have some of your personal information, do not give them any further information, no matter how persistent they are.
